This book is an attempt to authentically describe the era of the 4 rightly-guided Khaleefahs and how the Muslim lands were governed and administered during that time. This work comes after a similar attempt by the author with the Seerah.

The author’s methodology in authentication, as the title suggests, is to apply the rules of isnad criticism as they are applied to hadeeth. This is, however, only for those narrations that are related to belief or fiqh. For the other historical details, like specifics pertaining to battles and governors, he accepts reports after a slightly lesser degree of analysis.

He summarises the events in his own words together with deductions and lessons that he talks the reader through.
The book covers a wide range of issues related to this blessed era, such as: the function of the state, the style of governance, the justice system, the state’s income and expenditure, the environment for education and foreign relations in the form of da’wah and conquest.

There is also an introductory chapter on his sources with a brief introduction to what they contain and their worth. This is very useful for any serious student of Islamic history, as the author is an acclaimed authority on research in the areas of literature and manuscripts pertaining to Islamic history.
