“I recommend students of knowledge to read Tarḥ al-Tathrῑb instead of Nayl al-Awṭār” – Shaykh Muḥammad ‘Awwāmah Ḥafiẓahullah (personal communication – 2019)
Make no mistake about it, this book is a masterpiece in the field of Aḥādῑth pertaining to legal rulings (Aḥādῑth al-Aḥkām). It allows a student to understand how various rulings have been extracted from a single Ḥadῑth and how and why a difference of opinion has occurred.
Hafiz al-‘Iraqi first compiled the Aḥādῑth that have been narrated in Muwatṭā’ Mālik and Musnad Aḥmad with the most authentic chains of narration (aṣaḥ al-asanῑd) in a book titled Taqrῑb al-Asānῑd (تقريب الأسانيد). He compiled Taqrῑb al-Asānῑd (تقريب الأسانيد) in order to encourage his son, the illustrious Muḥaddith, Abū Zurʽah al-‘Irāqῑ, to memorise Aḥādῑth.
After his son had memorised these Aḥādῑth that covered the topics of Fiqh, Ḥāfiẓ al-‘Irāqῑ – at the time residing in Makah – began commentating upon these Aḥādῑth in manner described by the author as ‘detailed yet concise’, explaining the meaning of the Ḥadῑth, the differences of opinion amongst the scholars and the various interpretations and responses provided by the scholars who held each opinion. This includes a linguistic commentary of any difficult words as well as principles and rare insights that could be extracted from the Ḥadῑth. In the commentary, the author lists each benefit with a number, for example, “Fa’idah number one:” A unique feature of the book, other than its expansive content, is the author’s scrupulous nature when attributing a view of opinion towards a certain scholar.
He passed away before completing the commentary and so the commentary was completed by his son, Abū Zurʽah al-‘Irāqῑ.
Considering the status of the author as a Muḥaddith, this book is a must-have for students of Fiqh and Ḥadῑth alike.
This unique and beautiful print has used reliable manuscripts including one copied during the lifetime of the author from the hand-written copy of the author.
