Ibn Hazam al-Zahiri was a master scholar who was adept in his abilities as a Mujtahid. However, he had a sharp tongue and attacked many of the great ‘Ulama of the past. Despite narrating many narrations in his Al-Mahalla with his own chain of narration, his abilities in Hadith have been criticised by the likes of Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn al-Mulaqqin and Ibn Hajar.

Realising the need to address some of the problematic elements in Al-Mahalla, Maulana Sayyid Mahdi Hasan al-Shahjahānpuri (d.1396 AH), a student of both Allamah Kawthari and Allamah Kashmiri, wrote this refutation upon Al-Mahalla. The author states that he will use an approach similar to Ibn Hazam himself as fire can only be fought with fire. He also seeks support from the verse of the Qur’an:

*فاعتدوا عليه بمثل ما اعتدى عليكم*
“So attack them to the same proportion that they have attacked you”

The book itself is in four parts covered in one volume. It covers the Masail of cleanliness as well as a few Masail related to Ijtihad and Taqlid. The scholar’s erudite abilities are clear as he refers to a range of sources to refute Ibn Hazam and clearly demonstrates Ibn Hazam’s misunderstanding of certain positions of the various schools of thought. He demonstrates this misunderstanding using the books of these schools of thought, meticulously referring to Rad al-Muhtar, Bada’i al-Sana’i and Al-Bahr al-Ra’iq.

He also reverts to Hadith commentaries such as Umdatul Qari, Fathul Bari and Aridah al-Ahwadhi, as well as intricate Hadith books such as Al-Ilal of Ibn Abi Hatim.

One of the unique features of the book is the author’s ability to show the clear undeniable contradictions in Ibn Hazam’s thought and methodology.
