The author, Hafiz al-Sakhawi rahimahullah (d.902 AH), was the protégé of Hafiz Ibn Hajar. He travelled far and wide such that he was labelled Al-Ruhlah due to the amount that he travelled in search of knowledge. He is buried in Al-Baqi, close to Imam Malik Rahimahullah (d.179 AH).

For years, we had been relying on the print of this book that had been worked on by the German orientalist Franz Rosenthal. Whilst this print had some beneficial footnotes, it had the same mistakes as the previous print by the student of Shaykh Zahid al-Kawthari, Husam al-Din al-Qudsi. Along with this, Rosenthal has some sinister insinuations on some of the Sahabah and his method of Takhrij is bizarre.
