طبقات علماء الحديث – ابن عبد الهادي (المتوفى ٧٤٤هـ)

Imam Muslim says, “Indeed, the first thing that is necessary for a seeker and student of knowledge to learn is the stature of the ‘ulama in that field and their ranks amongst themselves.”
This book is one of many important books that cover the biographies of the great muhaddiths.

It is crucial, when seeking to learn about experts in any field, that the opinion of their fellow experts is considered, and this book is an example of that. Imam Ibn ‘Abd al-Hadi, one of a long line of great Hanbalis from the Qudamah family, is recognised for his profound mastery of the sciences of hadeeth, having studied closely with Imams al-Mizzi and Ibn Taymiyyah.

In this book he has compiled over 1,100 biographies starting with the Sahabah and ending with his own contemporaries.

Published by Resalah Publishers in four volumes, the layout resembles that of their famous edition of Siyar A’lam al-Nubala, including the extensive references in the footnotes for every entry, directing the student to where to find that particular biography in the other key biographical works. Most of the quotes from earlier authors that appear in the book have also been referenced in the footnotes.
